Serbia snatched dramatic World Cup lifeline as Luka Jovic struck in 96th minute against Slovenia

Jovic levelled the scores in the dying minutes to secure a valuable point

Serbia kept their hopes of reaching the 2022 World Cup in Qatar alive after Luka Jovic dramatically equalised in the 96th minute against Slovenia on Saturday.

The visitors had been on the verge of defeat after Andraž Šporar gave Slovenia the lead in the first half, but Jovic's late strike earned Serbia a 1-1 draw and a crucial point in their qualifying group.

Tough match for both teams

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams having their chances to win the game. Serbia had the better of the first half, but Slovenia improved after the break and took the lead through Å porar in the 66th minute.

Serbia pushed for an equaliser and were rewarded in the dying minutes when Jovic fired home from close range. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Serbian players and fans, who had been fearing the worst.

The draw leaves Serbia in third place in Group A, two points behind Portugal and three points behind leaders Ireland. However, Serbia have a game in hand on both of their rivals, so they still have a chance of finishing in the top two and securing automatic qualification for the World Cup.
